Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Manual ultrasonic testing of welds by operators certified to ISO 9712 Level 2 and Level 3, with evaluation and reporting.

Ultrasonic testing (UT)

Looking inside the weld with sound

Manual ultrasonic testing sends high-frequency sound waves into the material through a handheld probe. Reflections from internal discontinuities appear on the instrument screen, where a qualified operator locates, sizes and evaluates them.

Why UT

What ultrasonic testing is good at

Internal flaws

Detects volumetric and planar flaws inside the weld, such as lack of fusion, cracks and inclusions, which surface methods cannot see.

Portable and flexible

Portable equipment, access from one side only and no radiation hazard, so work around the inspection can continue.

Standardised

Ultrasonic testing of welds is described in standards such as ISO 17640, with acceptance levels defined by the applicable code.

Advanced ultrasonic methods

When manual UT is not enough

Phased array (PAUT)

Electronically steered beams and recorded images of the weld.

Automated UT (AUT)

Mechanised scanning of pipeline girth welds.
